The Trilogy That Never Gets Old For Me

No quod sanctus instructior ius, et intellegam interesset duo. Vix cu nibh gubergren dissentias. His velit veniam habemus ne. No doctus neglegentur vituperatoribus est, qui ad ipsum oratio. Ei duo dicant facilisi, qui at harum democritum consetetur.

I remember getting City of Stairs on a whim and falling into the book in a coffee shop while it poured rain outside. I was  entranced from the jump and fell in love with Robert Jackson Bennett. And soon I have to return to this world and read it again. Here's my little summary and review.

Book 1: City of Stairs (2014)

City of Stairs is a riveting and inventive fantasy novel that takes place in a world where the gods have been killed and their power has been diminished. The story follows Shara Thivani, a spy for the Saypuri government, as she investigates a murder that may have been committed by a surviving god. As Shara delves deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a web of political intrigue, religious fanaticism, and ancient secrets that threaten to unravel the fragile peace between the Saypuri and their former rulers, the Continentals.

Bennett's writing is sharp and evocative, and his world-building is top-notch. The city of Bulikov, once the seat of the gods' power, is a fascinating and fully-realized setting, filled with crumbling temples, haunted streets, and eerie remnants of the divine. The characters are complex and nuanced, and their interactions are always engaging. The plot is well-paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers hooked.

Book 2: City of Blades (2016)

City of Blades is a worthy sequel to City of Stairs, taking the story in bold and unexpected directions. The novel focuses on General Turyin Mulaghesh, a war hero who is recruited by the Saypuri government to investigate a secret research facility on a remote island. But as she digs deeper, Mulaghesh discovers that the facility is connected to a long-forgotten war, and that her own past may be coming back to haunt her.

Once again, Bennett's world-building is superb, and his characters are vivid and memorable. Mulaghesh is a compelling protagonist, a battle-hardened veteran struggling with her own demons. The themes of war, trauma, and redemption are handled with sensitivity and nuance, and the action sequences are thrilling and visceral.

Book 3: City of Miracles (2017)

City of Miracles is a stunning conclusion to the City of Stairs trilogy, wrapping up the story in a satisfying and emotionally resonant way. The novel focuses on Sigrud je Harkvaldsson, a fan-favorite character from the first book, as he seeks revenge for the murder of his friend and mentor.

Sigrud is a complex and compelling protagonist, grappling with grief, anger, and a sense of purposelessness. The novel is packed with action, intrigue, and heart-wrenching moments, and the themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and forgiveness are handled with great skill.

Overall, the City of Stairs trilogy is a masterful work of fantasy, filled with unforgettable characters, stunning world-building, and powerful themes. Highly recommended for fans of the genre!
